crônica (Portuguese; feminine noun): a short, informal and observational text, about daily topics
cronista (Portuguese; feminine and masculine noun): person who writes crônicas; in this case, me

A montage of 3 square photos. First, a desk with an open notebook, a pen, a laptop computer, and a jar with flowers, against a white wall. Second, a black cup with some coffee, and the upper corner of an open book. Third, a hand holds a mug, there's a bit of a leg wearing jeans and the trackpad of a laptop computer, all under bright sunlight.

I’m Juliana. I’ve spent most of my adult life in universities (in Brazil, in France, and in the US), obsessively pursuing degrees in History and becoming a medievalist. I wrote a dissertation about medieval French queens and royal burials, two topics I remain very passionate about and can talk about for hours (though I promise I won’t unless prompted to).

For years, writing was a source of stress (and occasional tears), and in 2023, I decided to reclaim what has always been a passion: using words to connect with others. This is how Juliana, cronista came to be: it is a space for me to share some ideas, some thoughts, and the occasional photo, about the things I read, the things I see, and the things I love (or don’t love so much). It’s a space for casual dispatches and longer pieces where I stretch some muscles and hopefully share some of my passions with you. It’s also, and foremost, a space to wind down and remember that sometimes it’s okay to just write.

You can expect to find posts about daily observations but also on languages (and living between them), translation (and being fascinated by it), history (despite all burns and bruises, I still love it), and art.

A note about images: unless noted, all photos shared were taken by me. I do not and will never use images created by generative AI (and the same applies to texts, videos, and other forms of content).

Juliana, cronista is also the home of read/don’t read: (extremely) short book reviews, a series of bite-sized reviews of books to help you find something new to add to your TBR or maybe something you may want to skip. You can see the archives of my reviews by clicking here.

I like to look at art & read books 📚 trying to make sense of stuff, one cup of coffee at a time ☕️
